It can be stressful preparing for a baby without thinking about the things you need to take to the hospital with you. Your maternity hospital bag should be at the top of your labour list. After all, it contains everything you need for when it is time to welcome your little one.
Getting your pregnancy hospital bag ready can be exciting but also daunting. You should make a hospital bag list before you start. This will keep you organised.
What to pack in a hospital bag is usually up to the mum as they decide what they want in their maternity bag. It’s the parents' choice to decide if they want a separate baby hospital bag for their newborn, or if they want to keep everything together.
We have created a list of hospital bag essentials for mum and baby so that you are prepared for your baby’s arrival.
Hospital bag essentials for mum:
Nightwear
You will need nightwear to sleep in. It is a good idea to bring with you loose fitting nightwear or nightwear with front opening if you will breastfeed.
Lots of spare underwear
When packing your bag don’t forget underwear. You will need plenty of spare underwear for when you are in hospital. Disposable underwear can be useful.
Breast pads
You should pack breast pads for after labour and birth. This is just in case you have any leaks.
Washbag
Don’t forget your toiletries. You will need the essentials including shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotions, deodorant, toothpaste and your toothbrush.
Magazines, books and other-pass timers
You should bring with you a collection of things to help the time pass. Labour can be a long process and you will want to keep yourself distracted. Books, magazines and tablets are great to help pass the time.
You should also bring your mobile phone with you. Having a phone and charger to hand will help you announce the arrival of your baby.
A spare pack of any medication
When you are packing your bag it is important that you make sure you pack any medication that you are currently taking. You should also pack a spare box of medication in case you need to stay in the hospital.
You might also want to consider bringing a tens machine with you, even if it's just for use on the way to the hospital.
If you wear contact lenses remember to pack some spare ones.
Snacks and drinks
You should come prepared with snacks and drinks if you or your birthing partner get hungry. If you forget or run out it’s not a problem as most hospitals will have a vending machine or somewhere to buy food and drink from.
Hand sanitiser
Hospitals have plenty of hand sanitisers, however, if you want to bring your own personal bottle you can pack that and bring it with you.
Comfortable bras, slippers and dressing gowns.
Be prepared by packing a few nursing bras or other bras that you will find comfortable. Make sure that the bras you pack are well-fitting for optimal comfort. You will also want to bring along your dressing gown and slippers for some extra added comfort.
Baby’s hospital bag essentials
Baby grows, vests and sleepsuits
Baby grows, vests and sleepsuits should be packed to dress your baby in once they arrive. With baby grows, it is a good idea to select baby grow’s that fasten up at the front.
Nappies, wipes and nappy bags
You’ll need to bring a selection of nappies, wipes and nappy bags for changing your newborn whilst in the hospital.
If you are looking for alternatives to baby wipes or you want something that is more gentle on the skin then you can opt for cotton wool balls or pads.
Muslin squares
Muslin squares can be draped over your shoulder or placed underneath your newborn to stop dribble from getting onto your clothes.
A coat or snowsuit
If the weather is cold, you might want to think about bringing something warm for your baby like a coat or a snowsuit.
Scratch mittens and socks
Newborns can get cold easily. You should pack scratch mittens and socks to keep your baby’s hands and feet warm. Scratch mittens are useful as it prevents your baby from scratching themself.
Car seat
It is mandatory that you bring a car seat with you to the hospital so you can transport your baby home when it is time to leave.
What you put in your hospital bag is completely up to you. You might want to bring extra items for added comfort such as teddies and blankets.
