Golden milk AKA turmeric milk AKA the miracle drink that cures all ailments! Kidding. But really, there is a reason that it’s a big food trend right now! Turmeric is mostly known to be used in curry dishes in Asian cooking. It is very high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, good for the liver, for digestion, for your skin and pretty much almost everything under the sun! So, I think you should go make yourself some of my 5 Minute Chai Spiced Golden Milk right now!

If you’re skeptical about drinking golden milk, don’t worry, I was also afraid to try it – I thought it would pretty much taste like curry milk. Trust me, it doesn’t taste like curry. By itself turmeric has a slightly bitter, and warming taste and when it’s paired with a touch of honey or maple syrup and some creamy almond milk it’s actually really tasty and soothing. I have been drinking golden milk for quite a while, throwing some cinnamon and a little vanilla in to change up the flavors. I had some chai spice leftover from my Vegan Chai Tea Spiced Chia Pudding I made a few weeks ago and decided to throw some in my golden milk. BEST decision EVER!!! There is something about adding that chai spice that takes golden milk to a whole new level. It adds a depth of flavor and warmth – I just had to share!

5 Minute Chai Spiced Golden Milk is super duper easy to make. Throw all of the ingredients into a little sauce pot, whisk everything together as the milk heats up. Pour into your favorite mug – the one that makes you smile – and sip away at the soothing golden milk – feel all the feels. I have even been known to whip up a double batch and store the leftover in the fridge and reheat it in the microwave – time saver bonus! You could even try it iced, I bet that would be very refreshing during the summer. OOOOH summer please hurry up and get here already!!!

A few things you should know about working with turmeric: 1) it can stain everything, counter tops, plastic, skin, fingernails – be sure to wipe up any spills right away. 2) Turmeric is related to ginger and is a root. You can often find it fresh -peel it, grate it and make the milk that way. I have done this and it does have a fresher taste, but convenience wins and I drink it more often using the dried form of turmeric. 3) Studies have shown that consuming black pepper with turmeric helps your body to better absorb it, plus it adds a little extra kick. Also, turmeric is fat soluble, meaning you need to consume it with a little bit of healthy fat in order for your body to absorb the nutrients. I find a small amount of coconut oil does the trick.

Description

A twist on golden milk AKA turmeric milk with some chai spice. It’s comforting, warming, and loaded with health benefits.

Ingredients

UnitsScale

  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk (or sub any milk you prefer)
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon dried turmeric
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon chai spice* (store bought, or see notes for ingredients)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup (or to taste)
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch fine ground black pepper**
  • 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil***
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (can omit if using vanilla flavored milk)

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a small sauce pan. Heat over high heat and whisk the ingredients together. Keep whisking until small bubbles form, immediately remove from the heat.
  2. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, more honey for more sweetness, or more chai spice for warmth etc.
  3. Optional step: If you want to prevent the coconut oil from separating you can use an immersion blender or transfer to a regular blender blend for 1 minute to create an emulsion with the oil. I usually skip this step and keep a spoon in my mug for stirring.
  4. transfer to a mug. Serve immediately or allow to cool and store in the fridge for up to 4 days, reheat gently in the microwave.

Notes

* Chai spice mixture, make as much or as little as you need: 4 parts ground cinnamon, 2 parts ground ginger, 2 parts ground cardamom,1 part ground cloves, 1 part ground coriander, 1 part finely ground black pepper

**It has been proven that black pepper helps our bodies absorb the health benefits of turmeric. Although there is some in the Chai spice I think it doesn’t hurt to add a little more.

***Turmeric is fat soluble, meaning you need to consume it with a healthy fat in order for your body to absorb its nutrients. Coconut oil is a good option because of it’s taste and it’s a healthy fat. I sometimes omit the coconut oil if I drink the turmeric milk with a meal that already contains fat.
